Testing conducted by Apple in July 2020 using preproduction 3.6GHz 10-core Intel Core i9-based 27‑inch iMac systems with Radeon Pro 5700 XT graphics with 16GB of GDDR6, 128GB of RAM, and 8TB SSD, and preproduction 3.6GHz 10-core Intel Core i9-based 27‑inch iMac systems with Radeon Pro 5700 graphics with 8GB of GDDR6, 128GB of RAM, and 8TB SSD. In March 2019, Apple updated the iMac to feature 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processors and Radeon Vega graphics. Unlike most other Apple releases, Apple opted not to announce the iMac at an event, rather to update the specs and release a press statement. For the first time, the iMac can support 6-core or 8-core Intel processors. Update, March 6 (10:40 am ET): Apple has confirmed that it is discontinuing the iMac Pro. Apple has stopped selling all but one of its iMac Pro models, with the sole configuration left listed as 'while supplies last', prompting many to speculate it may be the end of the line for the product.

- I think I can make it until Apple makes an Apple Silicon iMac. That may be a couple of years, though. If you're ready for an upgrade, or if you're in the market for a new iMac, you are not compromising with the 2020 27-inch model. If you are worried about buying an iMac with a completely new processor, the 2020 iMac is not a throwaway update.
- Apple last refreshed the iMac in mid-2020, but now is not a good time to buy an iMac. There are rumors that a major refresh is coming, and the new iMac models will feature an overhauled design.
